VINTAGE

At Schubert Estate our story is about the vineyard. A patchwork of diverse soils on this single site allows us to craft Shiraz from each individual block that showcases their uniqueness. Shiraz sourced from a balanced selection of sites across the estate aiming to serve as the ultimate statement of the capability of the vineyard in exceptional vintages.

The Gander indulges every ambition we possess to craft a grande marque Barossa Valley Shiraz. Lofty aspirations demand an exacting commitment to excellence and rigorous attention to detail at every juncture on the journey from vineyard to glass. Compromise is rejected outright. The very best bunches of fruit are hand harvested from individual vines. A final classification post extended barrel fermentation reserves an extremely limited amount of the best wines to be blended and bottled as The Gander.

Vintage: 2021
Tasting Notes: On the nose there are waves of layered red and black fruits intersected by fragrant spices and charcuterie notes. A rich melange of ripe dark fruits washes across the refined palate framed by a very fine tannin profile and balanced by beguiling acidity. For a wine of such impressive flavour intensity and power, the overall impression is of a remarkably agile, pretty and delicate wine displaying elegant restraint.
Cellaring :
The bold flavour character and velvety tannin profile our wines makes them eminently enjoyable immediately upon release. For those with patience, Schubert Estate wines will reward careful cellar maturation for 15 years or more.

Halliday Wine Companion – Dave Brookes
96pts
A selection of the best barrels from the estate in the given vintage, matured in French oak (approx 40% new) for 24 months. Super deep magenta-splashed crimson with aromas that are like a fruit essence. Blackberry, macerated satsuma plum , blueberry and black cherry conserve. Quite finely structured considering its opulent display of fruit, with ample fine-grained tannin support and some nice fresh acidity driving things along. Super stuff and classic western Barossa gear.

WBM – Mike Bennie
95pts
“A distinctly powerful, inky and rich red wine with the full force of regional flavour in ripe plum, choc-dipped raspberry, cola, liquorice and a coating of liquid spice and woody, cedary lift. All this well judged and woven together, but there’s no escaping the bold and muscular flex of the wine. Warm and rich through the finish with palate staining intensity. Impressive.”

Vinous – Angus Hughson
93pts
This barrel selection 2021 Gander Shiraz is a modern style with quite decadent oak but all works well for those with a deep cellar. It opens with strong and muscular aromas of broody dark fruits, roasted meats and cedary oak. Richly flavoured with chunky oak tannins in support which support a long, strong and teeth staining finish. A big wine with clear cellaring potential.

The Real Review – Aaron Basher
93pts
Deep, dark, inky and opaque in the glass. Plush, lifted and opulent aromas of stewed plum, pudding spice, sweet, nutty oak, cookie dough, mocha and a touch of menthol. Generously flavoured, concentrated and full bore. All dark, slurpy, brooding fruits, sweet spice and a fair whack of creamy, nutty oak. A decadent style of shiraz
