2018 ‘The Gosling’ Shiraz

Wine Orbit – Sam Kim - 95pts
A magnificent offering, the wine shows dark fruit richness, warm spice, dark chocolate and assorted nut aromas, leading to a powerfully expressed palate that's fleshy and opulent. Wonderfully structured by finely infused tannins, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2033

The goose theme is strong with this winery and presumably they have reason. To be honest, it sits a little awkwardly for someone who was scarred for life by a rampant goose when he was young – staying with some university friends in Melbourne, mid-winter, we’d arrived late at night and so it was sleeping bags on the lounge floor. Not knowing where the facilities were, as it was dawn and I did not want to wake anyone, I ducked out to the garden, where I was attacked by an insane goose and driven up on top of a fence, freezing in nothing but my undies, where I sat while the goose made so much noise that it woke not just the household but every house in the street. The story ends well as the goose became so aggressive it was relocated to a farm where it attacked a herd of cattle. Apparently, all that was left was a few feathers. I take great pleasure in ordering goose whenever a menu allows. But I digress. This is a single vineyard wine, under diam. From estate vineyards in the Marananga sub-region, the wine spends 18 months in older French oak to mature. Near black in colour, this is inky and tarry. Notes of mocha, chocolate, blackberries, cloves and a hint of orange rind. Espresso notes, black olives and coffee beans emerge on the palate. Rich and extracted, generously structured, well balanced, very fine tannins. This has a good fifteen years ahead of it. A superb, big, bold Barossa Shiraz. Love it.

Wine Pilot – Jeni Port - 93 pts
A little more obvious style on display here compared to the previous vintage release.
A little more fruit is evident, too, which is in better balance with the oak. All round, this is one smart, full blooded Barossa shiraz.
A solid aroma hit of ripe, plum-scented, black-fruited, spice and woodsmoke oak.
The palate is sturdy but nevertheless well composed with fruit intensity and added complexity via some delicious and inviting chocolate panforte notes.
Moves effortlessly across the tongue with plenty of Barossa upfront character. Rich, textural, chewy and long in length.

2018 ‘The Lone Goose’ Shiraz Viognier

Wine Orbit – Sam Kim - 97pts
Superbly fruited and enticing, the bouquet shows blackberry, vanillin oak, cake spice and potpourri aromas, followed by a sumptuous palate offering lavish texture together with layers of silky tannins. It's velvety and seamless with a sustained complex finish. At its best: now to 2036.

This blend is from a twenty-five year old vineyard located on Roennfeldt Road, part of the estate. The wine is made with co-fermentation of the components, which includes 3% Viognier. Wild yeasts, maturation is in older French oak barriques for 20 months. Under diam.
A very dark maroon hue, the nose is full of warm earth, florals, mushrooms, cigar box notes, dry herbs, spices and black fruits. Sleek tannins, a fine line of acidity, this is still youthful, but offering hints of early complexity. A wine of medium length which will provide pleasure for six to eight years. Decent balance.

A co-ferment of shiraz and viognier with the latter just a splash of three per cent.

What does viognier bring? That attractive deep red-purple colour glistens and catches the eye – that’s viognier at work.

Lots of everything on offer here which, it might be said, is the Schubert Estate way.

Christmas cake, chocolate, dusty cocoa, black fruits, high spice, woodsmoke oak provide a rich and luscious, dense and chewy wine.

Generous, robust tannins do their work, too.

It’s another highly convincing big-hearted Barossa shiraz, one of many from the Schubert Estate stable, that caresses rather than pummels.
